Lotus stem wick

The diya, heart of Hinduist ceremonies

The indian oil lamp, or diya, takes an important part in Hinduist ceremonies, and has been used to bless worshippers in temples or at home for generations. All the elements of the oil lamp have precise meanings and the Lotus stem wick, or Tamara Vattulu, is one of the most important.

The oil used in the lamp and the flame both represent the Goddess Lakshmi who blesses the worshipper with wealth. The brightness of the flame symbolizes the Goddess Saraswati who brings education and knowledge, and the heat from the flame embodies the Goddess Durga who burns away and destroys all evil.

The importance of the Lotus stem wick

Crafted from organic lotus stems with a tedious process done entirely by hand, this wick is believed to bring the blessings of the Indu deities Maha Lakshmi Maa and Sarasvati Maa over the worshipper. Those blessings include prosperity, wealthiness, and removal of previous birth karma.

It can be combined with different oils, each of them having a different meaning and a different deity attached to it:

  • Pure ghee ensures prosperity, health and happiness and is attached to the Goddess Maha Lakshmi
  • Coconut oil is attached to the Lord Ganesha
  • Sesame oil  ensures the removal of obstacles and evil effects, and is attached to the Lord Vishnu
  • Neem oil brings prosperity to the house
  • Castor oil ensures fame, happiness and helps reaching a devotional mindset
  • Panchadeepa oil keeps evil away and ensures prosperity, and is attached to the Goddess Parashakti

The choice of the lamp, of the wick, of the oil and even the direction in which to orient the lamp will bring altogether different virtues over the worshipper.
